Clouded Iris

Updated: Nov 18, 2020

The following image is a chromatic graphite drawing on MDF, the scale of the drawing is just below a2. Originally I had planned to carve the iris which is adorned by cascading smoke and chrysanthemums, however wood block printing is usually orchestrated using ply wood not MDF, unfortunately MDF is wood fibres rather than wood grain, resulting in the fibres to peel off when carving is attempted (I know this from testing my wood tools on the back of the MDF) rather than a satisfactory gouge. Though I was disheartened by not being able to carve into this material, I have decided to continue this as a graphite drawing over MDF as I have never drawn on this particular material before and the drawing itself has been somewhat laborious. Although I have drawn on a different material, I would still like to develop this composition further; over the course of this project I will be delving into an assemblage of mediums and techniques like never before, and I therefore want this composition to pay homage to that.

I have recently purchased some alginate and fine casting powder, both of which allow me to cast body parts such as hands and feet, given the nature of my project I will be casting my hands. I intend to attach one casted hand to this composition; I will allocate the casting toward the pupil of the eye, allowing the hand to pultrude forward embellished with hot glue drips which I will layer with acrylic and ink to colour the surface of the glue, replicating thinned paint. I want to document and literalise the feeling of being visually impaired, and as in Bramblitt's case, the fear of losing our relationship with colour. Though the world may seem dark for those who are visually impaired, I want to infuse that world with colour and inclusivity. I hope by adding a three dimensional variable to the composition I may deem it to be complete.

In regards to reflecting on the technical approach to this piece, I feel I depicted the organic mark makings of the iris quite well, being careful not to create the same mark and instead creating unique, elaborate lines which occasionally intertwine with one another but overall portray a moderately harmonious structure. I look forward to reviewing the final outcome of this composition, though for now I am happy to share some images of the piece in the making.
