Mediums - Black thread over canvas
The piece is titled ‘Courageous Carp’ due to the subject matter depicted over the canvas. The koi is symbolic of strength of character, perseverance, accomplishment and courage. The braille stitched into the canvas reads the word 'Courage.' The koi is associated with good fortune, success, prosperity and ambition. Their long history and hardy nature has also led to the koi being a mascot of longevity. All symbolisms derived from the nature of the koi I feel relate to the inspiring qualities adopted by the blind and visually impaired.
An hour and a half to draw over canvas, to then move on to hand stitching which took 75-80 hours to complete. I used a regular under over stitch, looping repeatedly over areas that where shadowed or lined with a more definitive form. The process to some may appear tedious, but I found the process to be therapeutic, the only qualm I had was when striating nearer to the frame and having to push my fingers through the stretched surface, additionally the occasional canvas rips were somewhat heart wrenching as I would have to conjure a new stick pattern.
Illustrated below are a series of images displaying the koi from a variety of elevations, alongside two videos, one of which tours the finished koi, and the second a time-lapse of me hand stitching the koi, as proof that I stitched the koi by hand. Digital editorial can also be seen below, depicting more holga effects experiments and installing motion and screen overlaying over the original image.
