Mediums used: Polyfilla, acrylic and silver foil
Both the polyfilla and acrylic were applied generously following a clockwise elevation to each stroke, an impasto base adorns the canvas. I had implemented various methods of application to ensure a thickened, texturised surface would arise, from the use of pouring to layering a with a brush and palette knife. I overlaid the acrylics all a-prima with flecks of silver foil and continued to conjure action painterly strokes. I found the ink to work quite well across the polyfilla and its elaborately porous, yet chalky texture; due to the matte like epidermis glazed over the polfilla, the acrylic settled into any which way I manipulated. I embellished the piece with further with a moderate dusting of silver foil as to accentuate the abstraction of the piece by affixing another tactile element; an element of which withheld a contrast to the roughened, stippled texture of the polyfilla and instead delineated a softened, silk like substance.
This was a smaller scale experimentation series which will prove to be complimentary to the expanding foam and acrylic pour paintings. I am quite content with the final outcome of this composition as I find it to be reminiscent of the ocean, a harmonic display to the previous expanding foam 'Oceanic.'. I am particularly happy with the textures shown within the piece as the chalky nature of the polyfilla has been shown clearly through the use of the mediums and application. Instrumenting an element associated with the environment in which its sourced from, especially peaks my interest as my work has related to bringing the composition to the viewer and allowing them to experience the environment of which its located, or inspired from. Creating an experience, a submergence within the image.
In regards to exhibiting this piece, I would have it mounted over a plain white wall, in conjunction to the other abstract painting which will follow suit. These paintings would be mounted in front of a headset and sensory jars I had mentioned in a previous post, which will play audio recordings taken from my time at the beach. Visual, sensory and auditory stimulation! Of course I may separate the pieces based off of palette, pairing this one with 'Oceanic.' given their blatant reference to the nature of the ocean and its waves, whiles 'Lava Lens.' and 'Canyon.' May pair together due to their similarities in palette.
