A chromatic lino printed series of a moth adorned by a pair of eyes upon its wings. The moth flies toward a sigil representative of bravery. A sigil is a symbol of ritualistic magic, its latin meaning 'seal.' A sigil acts as a mark of permanence to the subject it is bestowed upon, a pictorial marking which refers to the subjects desired outcome. I wanted to begin using sigils within my work to pay homage to my Wiccan beliefs and allow peace and prosperity to come from my work. I believe by blessing my work with sigils of positivity such as the one declared below, the barer of the print may develop the strength to carry on.
Bravery is a characteristic I find to be imminent within the blind and visually impaired community, not to be brave from blindness, but to brave to embark upon this work with lack of to no sight. Having the ability to adapt an overcome an ailment such as sight impairment is truly remarkable. The moth connotes toward determination, attraction and faith. Although moths are nocturnal, they are driven toward light for no apparent reason. Even when its efforts toward light prove dangerous and futile, the moth continues to drive forward, demonstrating its faith and determination. I find the moth to be a liable symbol of a visually impaired individual, as their ability to relearn new forms of technology and navigation truly inspires a drive within me.
I found this particular print to be quite successful in its printing, given the scale of the print being at a6 inking the linoleum came easy and distributing the ink even more so. I also find pleasantries within the double printed/ blotted impressions of the print as I find the delicacy of the impression to further emanate the appearance of a moth, whilst allowing for an oxymoronic portrayal of such a strong, vivid image.
